Chapter Twenty-One
Iâd like to say I managed to stay away from thematic song choices on the road trip. However, it wasnât long before the vamps convinced me to attempt âBat Out of Hellâ by Meatloaf. I wasnât sure if they made the request because they knew I could shift into a bat or because Alice could. Either way, It could have been worse. They could have asked for the Batman theme song. Nothing would disrespect my voice more than da-na-na-na-na-na BATMAN! And I wasnât a batman, anyway. I was a batwoman! Hear me shriek!
Speaking of bats, we arrived at the cave in southern Missouri shortly before sunrise. Traveling with vampires is tricky. One oddity about the bus was all the windows had been painted black. It made for a strange trip. Itâs a bit unsettling riding in a vehicle when you donât have any windows to look through. The only one that worked was the windshield. Still, since Alice was the only one who was properly licensed to drive a bus, and the sun would soon blast through the windshield, we needed to stop for the day. That, or allow Devin to drive the rest of the way.
Yeah, he didnât have a commercial driverâs license.
Breaking the law. Breaking the law.
Thank you, Judas Priest. Insufficient licensing, though, probably wasnât what the heavy metal rocker had in mind. According to Rob Halford, the frontman for Judas Priest, the only actual crime heâd ever committed was indecent exposure. He said as much in his autobiography. Still, I found a public striptease to the tune of âBreaking the Lawâ mildly unsettling, if not humorous.
We decided to quell our rebellious urges. Since we werenât meeting the other vampires Mercy had attempted to recruit for another day, though, we figured weâd just take the day to introduce the vampires weâd gathered to the hillbilly vamps.
The New Orleans vamps werenât likely to take a liking to Leeroyâs blood beans. We were all even less impressed by the blood bean farts pouring out of the cave. You didnât need my enhanced sense of smell to pick that stench up. That odor had the range of a skunkâs spray, and it was twice as rank.
A skunk doesnât know its own scent. Apparently, Leeroy and the hillbilly vamps didnât either.
As we entered the cave, Alice paused. âYou three might want to go back to the van.â
âWhy?â I asked.
Alice winced. âCall it a hunch. Theyâre preparing for a battle. That means, more than likely, theyâre feeding.â
I exchanged glances with Devin and Malinda. âWell, we donât exactly have a place we could go. And since we arenât really supposed to drive the bus without the right license what else are we going to do?â
Alice shook her head. âWhy donât you guys work on that potion? See if you can refine it a bit, come up with something that wonât require a thousand vampires feeding off a handful of elementals.â
Hailey stopped in her tracks. âWell, if weâre going to do that, Iâll need to take cover in the back of the bus.
